The pre-kickoff meeting for the AELIOS project (Alkaline Electrolysis – Innovative materials and Operating Systems to boost efficiency and durability under dynamic operation) was held on April 9, 2026. The project brings together top-tier partners from across Europe: TECNALIA (Coordinator), Stargate Hydrogen, Nano4Energy, ELHCO, RINA-C, F6S, and Matgenix.
With a total grant amount of approximately €4 million, the project aims to develop a durable and sustainable alkaline electrolyzer capable of sustaining dynamic operation when coupled with renewable energy sources.
This strategic initiative is co-funded by the European Union through the Clean Hydrogen Partnership. Green hydrogen is a fundamental pillar of the European strategy to achieve carbon neutrality, and the AELIOS project addresses this challenge by aiming to bring the technology to TRL 6 maturity, developing advanced materials and innovative operating strategies to reduce both capital and operational costs.

About the project
AELIOS is an ambitious project aiming to develop a resilient and sustainable Alkaline Electrolyser to move Europe’s clean energy transition forward. The project targets the delivery of a high-performance system based on highly efficient 3D-structured electrodeposited Ni-based electrodes and innovative operational strategies for seamless integration with renewable energy sources. AELIOS aims to substantially reduce the carbon footprint of the hydrogen industry through a focus on advanced materials, circularity and reduced operational costs (CAPEX and OPEX).
